Cemeteries

The Town operates and maintains 19 cemeteries.

Bracebridge cemeteries contain a noteworthy collection of monuments in a wide variety of shapes, colours, sizes, inscriptions and types of stone. Ranging from early sandstone memorials, to large rough blocks of granite and impressive high columns, to delicate marble statues and intricately carved headstones. These monuments represent family traditions, regional symbols and the lifestyles of the people who built the foundation for our Town.

The Town of Bracebridge holds a Cemetery Operator Licence #3286727 under the Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act, 2002.

All Town cemeteries are open daily from dawn until dusk beginning late spring until closing in late fall.

Purchasers have purchased the "rights" to be buried in the cemetery.  This is called "Interment Rights". Purchasers do not actually own the land, just the "rights".

Having interment rights means you have the right to bury or intern human remains or cremated human remains in a grave, lot, or niche. Any interment rights, which are sold and not used for interment purposes after a twenty-year period, may be considered abandoned by the Town.

The interment rights for unused lots and columbarium niches may be resold in accordance with the Cemetery By-law. Please contact the Administrative Assistant in our Corporate Services Department for the procedures on the resale of interment rights.

Yes, as long as the individual who holds the interment rights gives written permission.

No, in our cemeteries you may not scatter remains. On private property, permission must be obtained from whoever owns the land. You may scatter remains on Crown Land, including land covered by water, if it's unoccupied (e.g. provincial parks, conservations reserves, the Great Lakes), unless there are signs or postings that prohibit scattering.

When an interment right is purchased a portion is set aside for the long-term care and maintenance of the cemetery. These amounts are prescribed by legislation depending on the type of interment rights purchased and cannot be accessed by the Town.

Interments are performed at times mutually agreed between the Town and the requester, subject to the availability of the Town's contractor. Interments take place Monday to Friday and require 48 hours notice. Interments are performed on weekends and holidays for an additional fee.

A columbarium is an above-ground granite structure with niches that can hold up to two cremated remains, and are available in the Bracebridge Municipal Cemetery only.

The Town works with a contractor to add inscriptions to any columbarium niches. Contact the Corporate Services Department at 705-645-5264 for more information.

Review our Columbarium Niche Lettering Information Form for more information.

If you change your mind  within 30 days of your purchase, you can receive a full refund. After the 30 days has passed, you can sell your interment rights to a third party in accordance with the Town's Cemetery By-Law. Contact our Corporate Services Department to learn more about this process.
