Library Innovation and Technical Services Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Library Innovation & Technical Services Manager leads the Bracebridge Library’s technical, digital, and innovation services. This role ensures efficient management of library systems, fosters technological engagement for both staff and patrons, oversees the Makerspace, and directs the processing and maintenance of the library’s collections. By integrating technology and innovative strategies, the manager supports the library’s mission of advancing literacy and learning through contemporary solutions.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Technology Management

  • Oversee all library technology services, including Integrated Library Systems (ILS), digital resources, and automation.
  • Manage contracts with IT providers, vendors, and service providers, ensuring cost-effective solutions and uninterrupted service.
  • Act as the primary liaison with District IT or other technology providers for connectivity and systems issues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with hardware, software, and online resources.

2. Makerspace and Innovation

  • Supervise the Makerspace Coordinator to ensure efficient operation of equipment, tools, and programs.
  • Foster a culture of innovation by identifying and implementing new technologies and services to meet community needs.
  • Facilitate in the development and delivery of staff and public training programs for emerging technologies.
  • Lead the evaluation and adoption of innovative technologies for library services, programming, and collections.

3. Collections and Technical Services Oversight

  • Oversee the acquisition, cataloging, processing, and maintenance of all library materials, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Supervise the Library Technician: Technical Services in managing bibliographic records, repair, and withdrawal processes.
  • Collaborate with the CEO on collection management policies and maintain strong vendor relations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting on collection statistics, trends, and performance.

4. Staff Support and Development

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to direct reports, ensuring professional growth and excellence.
  • Deliver staff training on library technology, Makerspace tools, and digital resources as needed.
  • Collaborate with department heads to assess and address staff technology training needs.

5. Strategic and Operational Leadership

  • Collaborate with the CEO to develop goals and strategies for technical services and innovation.
  • Evaluate and enhance workflows for technical services and Makerspace operations.
  • Lead and contribute to cross-departmental initiatives, ensuring alignment with the library’s strategic goals.

6. Community Engagement

  • Identify and respond to community needs related to technology and innovation, developing programs that address those needs.
  • Represent the library at community events and professional meetings, fostering partnerships and promoting library services.
  • Support the development of digital literacy through programming and outreach efforts.

7. Other Responsibilities

  • Prepare statistical reports and participate in grant and funding applications as
    needed.
  • Assist with library programming, including events that showcase technology and innovation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Library Science, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a similar discipline preferred.
  • Specialized training or certifications in technology, digital services, or innovation would be considered an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in technical services, IT management, or a related field.
  • Experience in a library or public service setting is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency with library systems (e.g., SirsiDynix Workflows), ILS, and cataloging standards.
  • Expertise in Makerspace technologies (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters) and digital tools.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to foster innovation and manage change effectively.
  • Knowledge of current trends in library technology and public service.

Health & Safety Requirements

Library staff members are responsible:

  • To be familiar with and practice Library specific health & safety policies and procedures, as well as adopted related policies established by the Town of Bracebridge, and to provide a Police Record Name check as a condition of employment.
  • To be familiar with and comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and achieve a Certificate of Completion for the Ministry of Labour Occupational Health and Safety awareness training.
  • To take every possible precaution to protect themselves and fellow workers from health and safety hazards and unsafe situations.
  • To report unsafe acts or conditions to their supervisor or the Library’s Health & Safety Representative or any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • To report any occupational injury or illness immediately to their supervisor.
  • To use personal protective equipment, where required.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Hours: Full time, contract. – 35 hours per week, evening & weekend work will be required on occasion.

Physical: Requirement for sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting and in a field environment; to sit for prolonged periods of time; to routinely lift and move shipments in boxes up to 20 kg.; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to assemble minor furniture acquisitions.

Environment: Work is conducted in an office environment with some exposure to criticism from the public; close proximity to staff-used printer/fax/copier; frequent exposure to paper fibres and dust.

Requirement to juggle priorities, meet deadlines, verbally communicate to exchange information, deal with constant interruptions and changing demands during the course of a working day. Work outside normal working hours may be required occasionally.

Supervision

Supervisor: CEO & Chief Librarian

Compensation: $42.20 - $49.37 per hour, commensurate with education & experience.

Occupational Health and Safety awareness training from the Ministry of Labour and WHMIS training will be required. A current criminal record check, with vulnerable sector clearance will also be required for the successful candidate.
