Stormwater management ponds are not for recreational use

BRACEBRIDGE, ON (January 31, 2024) – Residents and visitors are reminded to stay clear of stormwater management ponds at all times. They are not to be used for any recreational activities including skating, hockey, and sledding.

Some stormwater management ponds are designed to have a permanent pool of water and are not monitored for ice thickness. They are engineered facilities that play an important role in protecting the environment and keeping neighbourhoods safe by:

• Collecting stormwater runoff including sediment, debris, road salt and pollutants;
• Providing treatment of pollutants to keep our watersheds healthy; and
• Alleviating flooding by storing and slowly releasing stormwater.

The ice that forms on stormwater management ponds is unstable due to the continuously flowing water, and fluctuating water levels and temperatures. There are currently nine stormwater management ponds with permanent pools in Bracebridge:

• On the north side of Clearbrook Trail (opposite Pheasant Run);
• At the end of Colton Court;
• Between No. 14 and No. 24 Hunter Place;
• On the east side of Chamberry Crescent (under construction);
• At No. 110 Clearbrook Trail (behind the Bracebridge Sportsplex);
• Behind No. 15 Little Ryan’s Way;
• East of the Walmart Parking Lot;
• South-east corner of Manitoba Street and Quinn Forest Drive; and
• Behind No. 192 Covered Bridge Trail.

Please be safe. Stay off stormwater management ponds.
