Reporting to the Manager of By-Law Enforcement or designate, the Student By-Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for assisting with the monitoring of compliance with the Town of Bracebridge by-laws; identifying, investigating, and reporting offences; enforcing Town by-laws in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and policies; and providing education and awareness about the Town’s by-laws to members of the Public.

What You Will Do:

  • Patrol the Town of Bracebridge and respond to complaints to ensure compliance with various by-laws, including but not limited to, parking, dog control, burning, business licensing, and noise.
  • Work collaboratively with other municipal staff on matters associated with interpretation and enforcement of municipal by-laws.
  • Provide information, answer inquiries and process ticket payments from members of the public.
  • Provide public education and awareness of by-laws and promote safety by undertaking various tasks associated with, and including issuing parking infraction notices, provincial offence notices, inspection reports, burning and dog control notices, public information brochures and other documentation and educational material as required.
  • Attend private and public properties in response to public complaints.
  • Investigate by-law offenses and attempt to obtain voluntary compliance and lay charges when necessary. Collect, compile, and maintain evidence to prepare for court proceedings, and attend and provide evidence in court in support of charges laid.
  • Pick up stray dogs or dogs at large and impound them as required.
  • Perform the duties of a School Crossing Guard as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent and currently enrolled in or graduating from post-secondary education related to law enforcement or another related field.
  • Prior work experience in a law enforcement setting is an asset.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR- C or willingness to become certified, an asset.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, provide information, and obtain buy-in related to Municipal By-laws, Provincial legislation and regulations in high charged circumstances as well as comfort and confidence in dealing with and deescalating difficult situations, including during field inspections.
  • Good working knowledge of Municipal By-Laws, Provincial Legislation and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS 2015.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, administrative, customer service, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, research, time management, reasoning skills, strong judgement and ability to work independently and as part of the team.
  • Excellent knowledge of Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office software applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
  • Possession of a Pleasure Craft Operator Card is an asset.
  • A valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s license in good standing with a current acceptable Driver’s Abstract and a reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
