Reporting to the Manager of Planning Services or designate, the Planning Services Student is responsible for providing administrative support to the Planning Services Branch of the department. This position will also provide customer service support and respond to inquiries from the public, and other municipal departments regarding the day-to-day activities of the Planning and Development Department.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance in the processing of various types of Planning Applications, development of by-laws, site plan agreements, and related studies and projects.
  • Prepare maps using geographic information system (GIS) software for Planning Applications and data entry into the Town’s Building and Planning database.
  • Undertake the preparation of advertising, promotion, and outreach with respect to by-laws and programs that are designed to educate and elevate awareness and voluntary compliance.
  • Conduct research and provide input, recommendations, and support for the creation and amendments to staff reports, policies, and by-laws.
  • Provide information and answer inquiries from members of the public.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent, and currently enrolled in or graduating from an accredited university or college in the field of Planning Services, or another related field.
  • Prior related work experience in a municipal setting, an asset.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C or willingness to become certified, an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS 2015, an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff including the ability to use sound judgement in stressful situations. Able to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, administrative, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills. Possess the ability to obtain buy-in and provide information and de-escalation in potentially highly charged circumstances.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. Experience using GIS software, an asset.
  • Ability to provide a current and acceptable Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Police Record Check.
  • A valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s License in good standing with a current acceptable Driver’s Abstract and a reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
  • Physical demands require extended periods of standing, sitting, computer usage, driving, walking, climbing, including in rough terrain, and lifting up to 51 lbs.
  • Ability to work schedule and shifts as stated. Work outside normal working hours may be required occasionally.
