Road Operations

Bracebridge's 320 km road network is comprised of both paved and gravel surfaces servicing urban and rural areas. Road maintenance programs are delivered to provide a safe driving environment, maximize the life of a roadway and to minimize the long-term reconstruction costs.

The Town of Bracebridge maintains all public roads within the town, with the exception of provincial highways and some District roads, in accordance with District Municipality of Muskoka Standards, Province of Ontario regulated "Minimum Maintenance Standards" and present Town "Levels of Service". These standards and service levels ensure safe roads for all vehicles and pedestrian traffic within our municipality.

The District Municipality of Muskoka is responsible for 730 kilometres of roads and 52 bridges in the community.

Public Works oversees and maintains approximately 61 km of Town-owned sidewalks in order to ensure pedestrian safety. The Town undertakes an annual repair and construction program to ensure that sidewalks are in a good state of repair.

On an annual basis, the Town of Bracebridge implements a period of reduced loads during the spring thaw on a majority of the Town's road system. This is done in order to protect the road base from damage caused by wheel loads of heavy vehicles and to increase the life-cycle of municipal roadways. This process is facilitated through the installation of signage advising reduced load restrictions officially on municipal roadways.

Pursuant to Section 122(7) of the Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.H.8 as amended, and in accordance with the Reduced Load Period By-Law 2022-045, reduced loads on municipal roadways within the area municipality of the Town of Bracebridge. Reduced loads apply to all roads under the jurisdiction of the Town of Bracebridge during such times as official signs are in place. Schedule "A" of By-Law 2022-045 lists those roads that are exempt from the reduced load limit period, as follows:

  • Armstrong Street from Wellington Street (Muskoka Road 118 West) to Wellington Street (Muskoka Road 118 West)
  • Ball’s Drive from Muskoka Road 118 West to West Mall Road
  • Barron Drive from Taylor Court to the end of the road
  • Cedar Lane from the Tayor Road roundabout (Muskoka Road 42) to Fraserburg Road (Muskoka Road 14)
  • E.P. Lee Drive from Lagoon Lane to Robert Dollar Drive
  • Gray Road from Monica Lane to the end of the road
  • Keith Road from Ecclestone Drive (Muskoka Road 118 West) to its southerly end
  • Kirk Line from Rosewarne Drive to Highway 11
  • Kirk Line West from Highway 11 to 100 metres westerly
  • Kirkhill Drive from Ecclestone Drive (Muskoka Road 118 West) to the end of the road
  • Lagoon Lane from Ecclestone Drive (Muskoka Road 118 West) to its westerly end
  • Monica Lane from Cedar Lane to Gray Road
  • Robert Dollar Drive from Ecclestone Drive (Muskoka Road 118 West) to E.P. Lee Drive
  • Rosewarne Drive from Taylor Road to Kirk Line
  • Salmon Avenue from Wellington Street (Muskoka Road 118 West) until the end of the road
  • Tayor Court from Taylor Road until the end of the road
  • Taylor Road from Highway 11 to Rosewarne Drive
  • West Mall Road from Muskoka Road 118 West to Ball’s Drive
  • Winhara Road from Ecclestone Drive (Muskoka Road 118 West) to the Town of Gravenhurst boundary
Restrictions on District Municipality of Muskoka or Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) roads, please contact the appropriate jurisdiction.

Road closures are sometimes needed because of emergency repairs or planned road improvement projects. The Town is committed to re-opening roads as quickly as possible so that traffic can return to normal.

The District Municipality of Muskoka Road Construction and Closures

A roundabout is an un-signalized intersection with a centre island. These circular intersections improve road safety, manage increased traffic demand and help improve air quality by eliminating unnecessary stops and idling.

A roundabout is located at the intersection of Taylor Road/Muskoka Road No. 42 and Cedar Lane in Bracebridge.
